Marjorie and Frederick had remained on the bench after Georgina left. Each was lost in their own thoughts. Frederick’s eyes were fixed on a point in the distance, while Marjorie watched with interest as a pair of robins flitted back and forth to a nest tucked in a nearby hedge, not far off the ground. She couldn’t help thinking how much simpler life could be if humans didn’t complicate things.

Their tranquil moment was shattered when she heard two familiar voices heading their way. Horace and Edna appeared in view.

Edna exclaimed, hands on hips, “Ah-ha! There you are, Marge. We’ve been looking everywhere for you, and you’re lounging on a bench. Bloomin’ typical.”

“Don’t exaggerate, Edna,” said Horace. “We’ve enjoyed a lovely stroll. My goodness, what’s wrong with your ankle, Fred?”

Frederick had rolled up his trouser leg again to let the air get to the purpling bruise. He answered calmly, although it was obvious to Marjorie that it was sore.

“I tripped over.”

Horace gave him a look of sympathy. “You’ve got quite a bruise there.”

Marjorie would have explained how she had startled the poor man, except she knew Edna would tease him without mercy and call him a wuss or some such name, so she changed tack.

“We’ve just had an interesting conversation with Georgina Winchester.”

“Oh? What about?” Horace asked.

Marjorie looked around. The gardens appeared quiet, but there were far too many places for someone to be lurking.

She made her decision. “If Frederick’s up to it, I suggest we leave Hallenguard—”

“Thank the Lord!” Edna exclaimed.

“That we leave the house for a while.” Edna’s face dropped. “DI Bloom – I take it you remember her?”

“How could we forget,” said Edna, “you and Mr Universe here crossing her crime scene?”

Horace chuckled, mock flexing his muscles.

“Oh, do be serious.” Marjorie couldn’t hide a grin herself. “As I was saying, DI Bloom is happy for now with the statement Horace gave to PC Trench, although she said to contact her if you wanted to tell her anything else. But as we are not under suspicion, we can go to the tennis.”

“Oh, goody,” said Edna, frowning.

“It’s better than staying here,” Frederick said. “I’m sure my ankle will hold up. It’s just a bruise.”

“It’s getting near lunchtime, Edna,” said Horace. “We can either stay here for another bring in or we could have a hearty lunch at Wimbledon.”

“You’re on,” said Edna.

“That’s settled, then. I agree it’s not ideal. At first, I dismissed the idea in my head, but it will do us good to get away while the police carry out their interviews,” said Marjorie. “Once we’ve found Johnson, we can tell you what we found out from Georgina.”

“Is it too much to hope that DI Bloom will have the crime solved by the time we get back?” Frederick gave a hopeful smile.

“Who knows?” said Horace, forever the optimist. “She might well have done.”

The four headed back towards the house with a sense of purpose. They found a row of rhododendrons and hovered there while Marjorie checked her phone. Johnson had texted to say he was on the way back.
